What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a form of Japanese bodywork. With origins rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, introduced to Japan in the 6th century, Shiatsu has, over time, developed its own unique style; incorporating elements of Western medicine, as well as Japanese culture and philosophy.

The word shiatsu comes from the Japanese words shi, which means finger, and atsu, which means pressure. The practice involves using fingers, thumbs, palms, and even elbows to apply pressure to specific points on the body, known as acupoints. These points correspond to different organs and systems within the body. As with any massage, the pressure applied to the muscles releases toxins, relieves tension, and realigns any problem areas. But Shiatsu also focuses on the flow of Qi (in traditional Chinese culture and the East Asian cultural sphere, qi, is believed to be a vital force forming part of any living entity) within a patient.

Shiatsu works holistically, healing mental, emotional and physical aspects of the body, through the restoration of energy balance, in order to promote health and strengthen the body’s healing abilities, allowing each individual to reach their own homeostasis.

The essence of Shiatsu is to connect with the energy of the person being treated, to listen to their body and respond accordingly. It is not simply a mechanical process of applying pressure to specific points, but a dynamic exchange between the practitioner and the receiver. This requires the practitioner to be present, attentive, and sensitive to the needs of the individual, tailoring the therapy to suit each client. As Lao Tzu wrote, "Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished." Shiatsu practitioners seek to embody this principle by approaching each treatment with a sense of calmness and mindfulness. By slowing down and tuning in to the energy of the body, they aim to facilitate a deep sense of relaxation and allow the body to naturally restore itself.

While Shiatsu can simply be a gift of downtime to yourself, the benefits are wide-ranging, and include:

·       Improvement in nervous, lymphatic, hormonal, and circulatory systems

·       Increased endorphins

·       Restored energy levels

·       Reduced levels of stress

·       Alleviated anxiety and depression

·       Increased range of motion and flexibility in the body

·       Enhanced immune system

Whether you're looking to alleviate chronic pain, reduce stress, or simply unwind after a long day, shiatsu is a safe and effective way to promote healing and rejuvenation.
